STEAM ONWARD's youth program, the Young Researchers Community Project (YRCP), started back in 2002 when a group of high school age youth in Maryland decided to educate the adults in their families and in their communities about disparities in health.
Women and minorities are substantially underrepresented in a number of STEM fields in the United States. According to a study by the Bayer Corporation, women and minorities are missing from the STEM workforce today because they were not identified, motivated, or encouraged to pursue STEM careers as youth.
STEAM ONWARD's Career Explorations Sessions contribute to providing youth with positive attitudes toward engaging in STEM activities. Through the Career Sessions we provide a series of opportunities for middle and high school age youth to increase their awareness that STEM topics and careers are accessible to people of all genders, ethnicities, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
