PURPOSE:
There is a resurgence of interest in farming (in particular, urban farming) recently in the Chesapeake Watershed and other parts of the country, as well as a heightened need for environmental justice as it relates to the land and our responsible use of it.
If you count yourself in the group named above, or are descendants of those who carry that rich and glorious past, this is an opportunity to truly know your heritage and grow our heritage. Let’s reacquaint ourselves with the land so that future generations can survive and thrive.
Black farmers have suffered historically from discrimination and lack of avenues for self-determination. We must learn from the past and move on toward healing and revitalization of our communities!
Let’s learn how to grow our own food, distribute and consume it for better health, and master recycling (e.g., composting) for better soil health, and improved food waste and recovery practices. This ensures a healthier food system to combat hunger and food deserts!
On March 14, we want to share success stories, pass on vital information on land availability, funding, and agricultural business techniques that will help our community thrive in the 21st Century working in various agricultural pursuits. New opportunities in renewable energy, the hemp and equine industry, specialty crops, oyster cultivation and other endeavors in the Chesapeake Watershed, are waiting for us to apply our abundant energy, ingenuity, creativity.
