Health Disparities

Youth today face many health-related challenges including obesity, diabetes, youth violence, and substance use. Steam Onward believes that young people can become agents of change in health and wellness.

Focusing mostly on minority health issues, the mission of YRCP is to increase the number of minority and under-served youth interested in health and medical careers.

Obese children and adolescents are more likely to become obese as adults. For example, one study found that approximately 80% of children who were overweight at aged 10–15 years were obese adults at age 25 years.

Sports and Fitness

Obesity is a serious health concern for children and adolescents. Obese children and adolescents are more likely to develop high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and Type 2 diabetes than are other children and adolescents.

With children’s nutrition under assault by fast food and junk food industries, it is no wonder that nearly one-third of youth 10-17 year olds are reported to be overweight or at risk for being overweight.

School gardening offers children opportunities for outdoor exercise while teaching them a useful skill. Gardens containing fruit and vegetables can also help to revise attitudes about particular foods.

Environmental Issues

By deepening a sense of connection with nature, school gardening can inspire environmental stewardship. Through gardening youth learn about water and energy cycles, the food chain.

When youth  feel a sense of connection to a certain species or individual plant, they have a reason to care about all the forces that impact that plant’s future.

Community gardens will act as an educational resource for the school and its neighbors. The phrase “community garden” in this case means a garden that is to be a resource for the community, but without individual plots separately managed by community members.

In addition to being an outdoor learning site the goal of the community garden will enhance the food security of students and the surrounding community by ensuring a supply of fresh vegetables.
