The Aida Project:

Exploring STEM Careers Through the Arts

To succeed today and in the future, youth need to be inventive, resourceful, and imaginative. The best way to foster that creativity is through the arts. Fostering the arts  and creativity is more important than ever in our global economy, Today’s workers need more than just skills and knowledge to be productive and innovative participants in the workforce. Through the combination of knowledge and creativity, we can transform the way we communicate, socialize, do business, and address social challenges. Creative experiences are part of the daily work life of engineers, business managers, and hundreds of other professionals.

To assist youth in linking the arts with the sciences Steam Onward, Inc. is currently developing an innovative project called The Aida Project. The opera Aida was selected because of it's historic  connections to Africa, and it's esteem in the arts community. Through explorations of the renowned opera Aida by Guiseppe Verdi (1871) Steam Onward will engage youth and community members in the numerous career opportunities that exist behind the stage in theatrical performances, such as sound engineering, lighting design, costume design, the chemistry of makeup, the physics of set design and construction, as well as the mathematics involved in all of the above. While Aida will continue to be our anchor performance project, other theatrical works will be added in the future.
