Restoration Projects: Environmental Stewardship

Wetlands Restoration

Plans have been created to renovate an existing wetland area just behind the school building into an outdoor science classroom.  Invasive plant species will be removed and replaced with native plants, observation platforms will be installed, and a seating area constructed.

Forest Trails Restorations

Currently, we are seeking funding for the rehabilitation of an existing running trail on the Thomas Stone High school site. The forest trails rehabilitation project will involve transforming the asphalt and mud trails into a porous interpretive running/walking nature trail that runs through the mature forest at the south end of the school grounds.

The forest trail rehabilitation project will include clearing debris, marking the existing trail, improving the under-story adjacent to the trail, removing invasive plants, and adding habitat, pollinator and other food source plants, and constructing additional outdoor classroom seating.

Youth will be engaged in the mapping of the running trail, and the identification of wildlife flora and fauna along the trail as well as the development of signage for the trail.  A design for the construction of one obstacle for an obstacle course along the running trail is being considered.
