Reducing Health Disparities in Minority Communities

THE PROBLEM: Health Disparities

Health disparities are a major problem in the United States.  According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) the death rate for African Americans is higher than whites for heart diseases, stroke, cancer, asthma, influenza, pneumonia, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, and homicide.

HHS also concludes that Hispanic health is often shaped by factors such as language/cultural barriers, lack of access to preventive care, and the lack of health insurance. Asian Americans contend with numerous factors which may threaten their health. Some negative factors are infrequent medical visits due to the fear of deportation, language/cultural barriers, and the lack of health insurance.

OUR SOLUTION: Youth Health Career Internships

According to the Sullivan Commission report Missing Persons: Minorities in the Health Professions, increasing diversity in the health workforce is essential if we are to effectively address the problem of health care disparities in the United States. Such strategies include providing opportunities for minority youth in secondary education to explore careers in health care and facilitate the ability of minority youth to make applications to health professions schools.
